About Our Company

A lumber yard in the Midwest that got its start from the California Gold Rush

Serving Northwestern Illinois for more than 150 years, Hoskins Building Center began as Wm. Hoskins & Company in Apple River, Illinois, in 1854.

Mr. Hoskins, the founder, was an immigrant from Cornwall, England who struck it rich in California during the Gold Rush and then came home to Jo Daviess County. After establishing the Apple River location, he continued to expand in Elizabeth, Galena, and Cuba City, Wisconsin. The businesses were operated by his sons-in-law. Over time, the businesses were sold out of the family. The Elizabeth location was the last to be sold, though strongly operational, in 1971.

One of the largest distributors of Marvin Windows in the State of Illinois

Today, Hoskins Building Center & Showroom, purchased in 2002 by Eric and Pam Wheelwright, continues to grow and is proud to bear the name of its founder and preserve the core values of the family business that have made it to be so strong: Commitment, quality, and customer service. That same commitment to “going beyond” has made Hoskins Building Center one of the largest distributors of Marvin Windows in the State of Illinois.

In 2006, Hoskins added a 2,800 sq. ft. cabinetry and appliance showroom across the street from the existing lumber yard, creating an environment where customers could walk through and experience the products and possibilities, turning their dreams into reality.

In 2012, Hoskins answered the community’s need for a hardware store (the hardware store in Elizabeth closed at the end of 2011) and an addition was built to house over 4,000 new items of inventory. Hoskins Building Center is now open 7 DAYS A WEEK to better serve our community.
